Thursday Photo Friday #8

Keeping with this week’s Germany theme, another photo from lovely Dresden:

This time from the Zwinger, a baroque palace complex that today houses galleries of fine art. You cannot go wrong spending hours here!

On such a short visit to the city, we skipped the artistic highlights and instead soaked up the atmosphere from shady courtyard benches. This photograph captures one of the hundreds of sculptures dotting the upper viewing gallery, with the Zwinger’s famous Glockenspiel Pavilion in the background. (True to its name, the Glockenspiel, made up of 40 bells of white Meissen porcelain, rings a short tune every 15 minutes.)

The sculpture pictured had already undergone restoration to bring it back to its original tan glory. Restoration work was slowly moving around the upper gallery, with sculptures and handrails alternating radiant sand or darkened black tones. The difference is stunning; I have renewed appreciation for the efforts and technology of modern museum professionals!

Stunning! I love how to capture the sculpture a bit off center that allows us to see the courtyard in the background.

Beautiful shot! Really nice composition. We are budget travelers so I love your blog, btw. ;)

We just spent a few weeks in Germany and had a great time, although I must admit I am glad to be back in some heat and sun now on the French Riviera. ;)

We are from Ca so prefer our winters warm, so heading even further south soon. Loved the colors in Germany in the fall though and no crowds on Romantic road, Lubeck and Alscace.

So affordable, the sitting and soaking! What a great picture.

I love the way you put together this shot. And great idea to just sit & soak in the atmosphere.. I’d probably run around trying to see everything, and in the process not actually soak in a thing.

Love the vantage point in this photo,
You’re right, sometimes the best travel experiences come when you just take the time to sit and soak in the atmosphere in the local plaza or coffeehouse.
